SAVE YOURSELVES!

3.5 STARS

A throwback to the plethora of sci-fi films that graced the ‘50s, Save Yourselves! takes the concept of an alien invasion and firmly cements it in a 2020 setting. Well, a 2020 in which people are actually allowed to travel to a remote cabin in upstate New York.

On point performances from Sunita Mani and John Reynolds complement each other in such a way that forces a constant smile as the millennial couple worry about their sourdough starter, debate gun usage, and generally flounder their way through the apocalypse. The modern humour and excellent comedic timing are what give Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s, feature, directorial debut its charm.

The motive and actions of the extra-terrestrials are, on occasion, unclear. However, the ambiguity of their sudden appearance on Earth and the sheer fantasticity of the final sequence can be openly interpreted, and this feels appropriate. Plus, the design of the ‘critters’ suits the tone of the film well.

Save Yourselves! is not a cinematic game-changer, nor does it pretend to be. It’s a light-hearted comedy that’s guaranteed to muster a giggle while offering an escape from the world as we know it.

As always, I advise only to watch half of the trailer! That gives you all the information you need without feeling like you’ve had the film spoiled.
