BAD TRIP
Kitao Sakurai (2021)
1 STAR
In 2002, Jackass kickstarted a wave of hidden camera prank films, Sacha Baron Cohen stepped the model up a level with Borat in 2006 and, with Bad Trip, Eric Andre and Kitao Sakurai have provided the weakest submission of the genre to date.
The first scene of a film should prepare the audience for what’s to come, and Bad Trip, at least, succeeds in this. As a completely nude Andre, professes love for his high school crush, one can swiftly deduce that this film will provide toilet humour, unlikeable characters, and, worst of all, sketches that simply aren’t funny.
A paper thin plot sees Andre and Lil Rel Howery embark on a mcguffin filled road trip through a series of appalling gags that rarely result in even mildly interesting reactions from the poor bystanders that are subjected to the pre-pubescent humour.
On rare occasions, the victims of Andre’s pranks show moments of admirable humanity that, I have to admit, tickled a smile from my lips. However, these are swiftly forgotten as Andre and co. continue their rampage to New York. It is impossible to defend this film as you watch a man in a gorilla costume rape the american comedian while a gaggle of bystanders watch on, as horrified as I was.
